Art Within Nature

This dance is mainly used to dance to catholic saints, as a form of thanking them for the favor that was done for them. But here in the United States the dance is used for Catholic events at the church or at houses, and for Hispanic cultural events. For example the festivals and the Nevada Museum of Arts for “Dia de los Muertos”.

Matlachines Guerreros de Reno  has also been invited to places to perform at Stockton, Modesto, Sacramento, Fernly, Susanville, and Locklock, Carson City for the big parade for Nevada Day, and for the Trails & Vistas Art Hike in Truckee, California. In Mexico the dances are used for fairs, for example many dances appear in a fair named “La feria de San Marcos” which takes place in the original state of the dance, Aguascalientes, Mexico.

The head dresses that are worn for the dance have many names, such as, "Coronas, and Monterillas” but the main name that is used is “Penachos”. On the chest we wear something called a “Chaleco” on the bottom half of our body's we wear something called a “Naguilla”. Other things we used are,”Guajes, Flechas and Huaraches,” The “Guaje” is a form of a Maraca, the “flecha”is a bow and arrow, and the Huaraches is a popular shoe seen all throughout Mexico.

The Trails & Vistas Art Hikes welcome a stunning traditional performance by the drumming and dance group Matlachines Guerreros de Reno. Matlachines, which is a traditional dance from Aguascalientes, a state in central Mexico. The dance originates from a combination of pre-hispanic and colonial music and dance. The Matachines are a group of dancers, with a well-defined structure and functions, whose objective is to make a pilgrimage while dancing.
